Say "Goodbye" to the Puff-Of-Air Test
The doctors and staff of Arlington Eye Care and Handel Vision Clinic strive to bring you the latest and greatest technology to make your eye exam more convenient and comfortable. If you haven’t visited us in the last year, you might not be aware of a new technology that we guarantee you will love! The Icare® tonometer, which has replaced that dreaded puff-of-air test, is used to measure your intraocular pressure.

Measuring your intraocular pressure (IOP), or internal eye pressure, is an important part of your routine eye exam. Elevated IOP can be an indicator of glaucoma. Glaucoma usually causes no symptoms or pain, initially, but left untreated glaucoma can affect your peripheral vision and may eventually lead to blindness.

In the past non-contact tonometers, more commonly known by patients as the “puff-of-air” test, calculated your IOP based on your eye’s resistance to the puff of air. While the instrument did not touch the surface of your eye, it was a test that caused many patients a lot of anxiety.

The safe and painless Icare® tonometer has pleasantly surprised many of our patients. It uses a light probe that gently bounces off the surface of your eye. No eye drops are required and the test is virtually unnoticeable. This easy-to-use instrument is especially revolutionary for children and patients that had trouble keeping their eyes open for the puff-of-air test.

We are sure that you will find your next eye exam at Arlington Eye Care or Handel Vision Clinic to be more enjoyable because of the Icare® tonometer and our many other new technologies.
